Eugene Bianchi searches the tradition for more democratic models although his praise for Pachomian monasticism over against the Benedictine model strikes me as odd; Pachomian monasteries seem to me to have been little more than pious pressgangs while Benedictine monasticism has a strong democratic mechanism built into its ethos.
