private carrier

private carrier n. one who provides transportation or delivery of goods for money, just for the particular instance, and not as a regular business. It is distinguished from a "common carrier" which is in the business, such as buses, railroads, trucking companies, airlines and taxis. However, a private carrier may be liable for injuries to anyone who pays or shares the cost of transport. (See: common carrier, guest statute)

Now private carriers cream off the lucrative business post and dump them on Royal Mail for delivery.
Earlier this month, hundreds of pilots at India's largest private carrier by passengers, Jet Airways (India) Ltd went on mass sick leave for six days to protest against the firing of two pilots instrumental in forming a pilots" union.
State regulators are dead set against that, and say that State Farm needs to let its own agents begin writing for other private carriers instead of having agents just place their customers in the state-created insurer.
