The pantomime metaphor fits because this is indeed a pantomime horse, wrestling and pulling head against commonsense tail in the dark.
Then there were the fairies, unnerving, dressed in black, scavenging in the woods, pulling heads off dolls, lling the theatre with whispers and urmurs, and carrying a lifelike but rather creepy puppet that is the changeling baby boy.
