It is almost tantamount to putting to sleep a faithful old family dog who has an incurable malady.
On late December, General Motors announced that it would phase out its Oldsmobile division over the next few years, thus putting to sleep the longest-lived car brand in the country (named for its founder, Ransom Eli Olds, the first Oldsmobile hit the showroom in 1897).
