In 1887 a not very successful literary-minded young doctor in Southsea wrote despairingly a short detective novel which contained the ingredients for all such future stories, namely, a private professional detective of ratiocinatory brilliance who traces the murderer and solves the crime, plus a friend and foil who recounts the events and extols his friend's powers.
