TO RENOUNCE. To give up a right; for example, an executor may renounce the right of administering the estate of the testator; a widow the right to administer to her intestate husband's estate.

Why I included them in my holiday reading package I'm not sure - two weeks on a Scottish island isn't exactly renouncing the world.
It's 50 years since each stood among other young women in a French convent chapel and, dressed as brides, felt their Sister Superior snip off a lock of their hair, a symbol of their renouncing the world.
She said her duty as a mother did not end with her renouncing the world, instead she took me in and I grew up very much like a temple girl.
