Bernard Cardinal Gantin, then-prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, cited this canon on July 1, 1988, when he decreed the excommunication of Archbishop Lefebvre for performing "a schismatical act by the episcopal consecration of four priests, without pontifical mandate and contrary to the will of the Supreme Pontiff. Erroneous and Schismatical Opinions is not quite history, but it does contain the raw materials out of which history can be made. This, he says, was due to the fact that "the South's religious mind was inarticulate, dissenting, and schismatical. |
