writes such phrases as "the spleenful sense / And spite of malice" (33-34), "the home of his condition and estate" (306), "true proof and knowledge of a friend" (354), or "the sour-bitter scourge / Of torture and affliction" (395-96), he is using a rhetorical flourish that Wright shows is not a commonplace but something like Shakespeare's private property.
