Basbaum, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco, studied the distribution of substance P and its receptor molecules in the spinal cord. The peripheral neurons that release substance P are thought to send pain signals to the brain and to help regulate the immune response in damaged tissues. Compounds that moderate Substance P not only moderate pain, but also reduce the inflammation that exacerbates many ailments, such as arthritis and asthma. |
