Hamlet feigned madness; Matt teeters on the edge as Joker, his gibbering alter ego, spurs him closer and closer to nihilism. Though the plot teeters on the edge of melodrama, it's redeemed by the force of Nine's personality, which infuses the book with grit and humor. The story teeters on the edge of sentimentality and sometimes topples right in, but the characters are so likable, so genuine, it's an easy flaw to forgive. |
