Data from 1997 to 2004 show that the main antimicrobial classes used in livestock are tetracycline and trimethoprim sulfonamide combinations. All the samples were then tested for four genes known to make bacteria resistant to the antibiotics tetracycline or sulfonamide. Among the antibiotics used are ampicillin, bacitracin, erythromycin, lincomycin, virginiamycin, and tetracycline (Food and Drug Administration 2004), some of which are important in human clinical medicine. |
