Although economic liberalism seemed to give theoretical justification to the roll-back of Keynesian rules, and substitution of competitive, agent-principal rules, its advocacy of market solutions was as totalising as command economy solutions.
As with development, a totalising vision has been constructed which offers both the means of 'progress' and the overall goal to be aspired to, and in which any relevant factor becomes enveloped, reconfigured, and then represented within the self-perpetuating 'grand narrative' of sustainable development.
Once again there is the emergence of processes that are totalising and an alliance of these processes with systems of technological control.
