The figure below compares the S&P 500 earnings yield with the ten-year Treasury bond yield, It shows that, beginning in September 2002--and for the first time since Ronald Reagan's first election--investors required from equities a higher earnings yield than the benchmark bond yield. Treasury announced last week it is bringing the 30-year Treasury Bond back in February. The Fed's more optimistic statements regarding inflation at the meeting have produced the opposite effect on the fixed rate 10-year Treasury bond however, helping it sink back down after spiking in March, and could help perpetuate, at least for the time being, peak real estate values associated with low financing costs. |
