In addition, the patient had hypoesthesia of the left trigeminal nerve and a severe to profound mixed hearing loss on the left. Electrical stimulation at motor threshold as applied by Farragher et al (15) would not elicit contractions in wholly denervated muscles; therefore, this stimulation almost certainly elicited contractions only in those muscles supplied by healthy motor nerves of the face (ie, the trigeminal nerve, which innervates nearby muscles of mastication) or facial nerve fibers unaffected by a partial Bell palsy. The electrodes passed currents about every 15 to 30 seconds to the trigeminal nerve, which extends into the brain from the face and forehead and can inhibit seizures. |
