CVM has received some information indicating that sulfonamides, some in combination with trimethoprim, are being prescribed for use in treating conditions in lactating dairy cattle for which they are not approved," the notice states. Only two prescription drugs--the antibiotics trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole--made it into drinking water, and only in trace amounts. The drugs most often used to treat routine, uncomplicated UTIs are trimethoprim (Trimpex), trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra, Cotrim), amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, Wymox), nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin), and ampicillin. |
