Over the 3 months prior to consultation, he had noticed mild hypernasal speech and velopharyngeal insufficiency evidenced by nasal regurgitation of solid and liquid oral intake.
The results of the studies by Ysunza and his associates (Ysunza, Pamplona, & Toledo, 1992; Ysunza, Pamplona, Femat, Mayer, & Garcia-Velasco, 1997) suggest that treatment of compensatory articulations did improve closure for speech; however, the velopharyngeal insufficiency was not totally eliminated.
Speech problems can be seen as well and include dyspraxia, forced speech, and hypernasal speech due to velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI).
