The low incidence of pulmonary embolism implies that vena caval filters are not routinely required for this procedure.
Some researchers have used the insertion of vena caval filters to prevent major pulmonary embolism (1,2).
In ICU applications common examples include vascular stenting of coronary and cerebral vessels, catheter ablation of central pulmonary clot, and placement--and removal--of inferior vena caval filters.
