Some years ago at the defense of a dissertation that dealt in part with Pirandello's Vestire gli ignudi, I was surprised at a reading of the ending of the play that did not at all correspond to my recollection of it.
Tornando poscia a far le regie imprese, / consigliavan que' pazzi con bel dire / il viver prisco, il buon cibo e vestire.
The original, Italian version of this outstanding survey of early modern European domestic life and its participants' housing, food, and clothing had an appropriately explicit title: Vita di case: Abitare, mangiare, vestire nell'Europa moderna (1999).
