This is likely due to the accumulative bridging effects of the corpus callosum that result from wallerian degeneration injury from distal lesion plaques or from an underlying low-grade inflammatory vasculitic/ ischemic process.
2) Following the trauma, the interruption in the continuity of a nerve results in wallerian degeneration, characterized by the loss of axons in the proximal stump and retraction of axons in the distal segment.
The process by which the severed part of the axon dies is called Wallerian degeneration.
