a body charged with controlling cartels, monopolies and mergers and hearing appeals against the Director General of Fair Trading in such matters. Its decisions maybe challenged in the High Court or the Court of Session in Scotland. It is modelled partly on the Commission of the European Union's function in competition matters (see COMPETITION POLICY).
The acquisition was the subject of a Competition Commision inquiry which identified the overlapping areas, including stores less than a quarter of a mile from each other in Coventry, Cheltenham and Stafford.
