direct rule

the name given to the system of governing Northern Ireland during the suspension of the Stormont Parliament from March 1972 until 1999. Executive power was exercised by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and laws on matters with which the Stormont Parliament could deal were made by Orders in Council.
