Claiming this has "had a negative impact on import suppliers", the US formally called for the declaration to be released, with information on its content, purpose, licensing requirements and administration by the Euratom Supply Agency. If the US is successful, it could base a disputes proceeding on this information, claiming a breach of WTO fair trade rules.
The European Parliament has adopted with a large majority a report by Romana Jordan Cizelj (EPP-ED, Slovenia) calling for more ambitious revamping of the Euratom Supply Agency. The consultation report calls for better definition of the agency's mission taking into account new objectives such as security of supply.
The post of Director of the Euratom Supply Agency has still to be filled, Christian Waeterloos currently standing in as acting Director.
It was able to authorise the operation after receiving guarantees that Areva and Urenco would act independently, notably in determining future capacity, and that the Euratom Supply Agency would play an increased monitoring role.
