Lord Advocate the senior law officer for Scotland. All prosecutions run in his name, and he represents many government departments in Scotland. He is a member of the government but need not be a Member of Parliament. Actions by and against government departments are raised by and against the Lord Advocate. He is in charge of the prosecution of all crime in Scotland and all solemn prosecutions run in his name. See also ADVOCATE GENERAL FOR SCOTLAND.
