procurator fiscal a public prosecutor in Scotland. The procurator fiscal prosecutes in the sheriff courts (although proceedings on indictment there run in the name of Her Majesty's Advocate) and the district courts. A decision not to prosecute can probably be reversed by the Crown Office. There are other duties: the fiscal investigates sudden and suspicious deaths and has responsibilities in relation to intestate estates. He or she also instigates fatal accident inquiries. For England, see CROWN PROSECUTION SERVICE.
