procurator fiscala public prosecutor in Scotland. The procurator fiscal prosecutes in the sheriff courts (although proceedings on indictment there run in the name of Her Majesty's Advocate) and the district courts. A decision not to prosecute can probably be reversed by the Crown Office. There are other duties: the fiscal investigates sudden and suspicious deaths and has responsibilities in relation to intestate estates. He or she also instigates fatal accident inquiries. For England, see CROWN PROSECUTION SERVICE.
