pleadings

the formal written statements of the parties in a civil action developing and ultimately defining the points at issue between them; they contain assertions of fact, which the parties propose to prove, and statements as to the remedies sought.

Where possible, the claim will be determined solely on the basis of the parties' statements of case.
But measures have been taken to control exchanges: the Chamber of the Court can therefore "specify the matters of law to which such statements of case or written observations must relate" and "the maximum length of those documents" and the period in which they must be submitted.
