the department dealing with the former activities of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise. The two bodies were merged in 2005. The joint body is responsible for collecting the bulk of tax revenue, paying tax credits and child benefit, as well the enforcement of the national minimum wage and recovery of student loan repayments.
