Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB)
a non-departmental public body responsible to the Scottish Executive. Among other things, SLAB assesses applications for legal aid, both civil and criminal, and scrutinizes accounts for payment. It registers firms and solicitors under the Board's Code of Practice in relation to criminal legal assistance and monitors compliance. It registers firms for civil legal assistance but compliance with the substance of the civil scheme is with the Law Society of Scotland.
