deferred sentence
deferred sentence
in Scotland a court can put off sentencing an offender, either for a short time to obtain reports to assist in disposal or often for a longer time on conditions, the most common being a deferred sentence for the accused to be of good behaviour or, less often, to allow repayment of sums embezzled or stolen. For England, see SUSPENDED SENTENCE.Collins Dictionary of Law © W.J. Stewart, 2006
