The objective of the experimental research is to investigate factors influencing the drying, such as temperature, relative humidity and air velocity, in the chamber during artificial drying
of 32 mm thick beech lumber, and the analysis of the experimental data in terms of achieving higher drying rate, i.e.
Air-drying exposes the wood to periods of rain and drying which leach out excessive harshness (tannin) while retaining desirable components such as vanillin, 70% of which is lost during artificial drying
. And "toasting" of the barrels is carried out more slowly over a lower heat, allowing a deeper penetration of the flame.
This phenomenon has also been reported under artificial drying
and preconditioning (slow drying before fast drying) treatments (Loeffler and Burris, 1982; Herter and Burris, 1989a; Peterson, 1997).
