The meaning made in a Coltrane performance entailed an audience's willingness to be changed by a sonic encounter, to enter into the intimate physical surrounds of music whose amplitude, affect, and embrace of unfamiliar territory promised to penetrate and rearrange their auditory field. Here the audience becomes complex players in the performance, both offering their bodies and minds as subject to the transformative power of music, and actively, critically interpreting that music in an auditory analog to the literary scholar's relation to a text.
