An ancient gun shop rule of thumb that actually works pretty well is for the shooter to determine if he or she can put the trigger finger in proper firing position, with the butt of the stock in the crook of their bent elbow. A too-short butt-stock will work fairly well for the long-armed shooter, but a too-long stock will be a horrible impediment to the shooter with shorter limbs.
