Thus Athenian democratic justice was normally seen to be done in public by mass juries (typically 400-500) of ordinary citizens acting as judges who reached their undiscussed and inappellable judgements influenced less by strictly legal, than by broadly political (and often shamelessly emotional) argument, and concerned less for equity or dispute-settlement than for what they took to be the community's best interests, including the democratic accountability to them of the prime litigators, members of the social and political elite.
