independent school

a school at which full-time education is provided for five or more pupils of compulsory school age and which is not a school maintained by a local education authority or a special school not so maintained. It is immaterial if full-time education is also provided at the school for pupils under or over compulsory school age. There is a statutory ‘Register of Independent Schools. One of these is kept for England by the Secretary of State and one for Wales by the National Assembly. It is an offence to run an unregistered independent school. Registered schools are monitored by way of independent school standards which comprise: the quality of education provided; the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils; the welfare, health and safety of pupils; the suitability of proprietors and staff; the premises and accommodation; the provision of information; and the manner in which the schools handle complaints. Similar provisions exist in Scotland.
