Deceitful boasting, a deceptive claim, or a continuing assertion prejudicial to the right of another.

One form of jactitation at Common Law is slander of title—defaming another person's title to real property. Some jurisdictions provide a remedy when the injured party brings an action for jactitation.


a false claim that tends to harm another person. A false assertion that one is married to another was formerly actionable at law.

JACTITATION. OF MARRIAGE, Eng. eccl. law. The boasting by an individual that he or she has married another, from which it may happen that they will acquire the reputation of being married to each other.
