There are specialist libraries where personal collections are held and the annual events are eagerly anticipated, while our National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth is a jewel in the crown, a national
legal deposit library which, like a huge umbrella, holds the largest collection of books, maps, portraits, photographic images and archives in Wales.
(3.) UK legal deposit extends to the Republic of Ireland due to the Act of Union of 1801 at which time Trinity College Dublin was made the Irish
legal deposit library. This historic arrangement extends to this day and both countries benefit from receiving the publishing output of two countries.
The institution is a
legal deposit library, holding over thirteen million items of printed material and collecting approximately 60,000 items each week.
It examines the change in collecting practices in one
legal deposit library. The author considers how the idea of permanence, understood in cultural heritage terms, influences digital culture, and, thus, digital technology.
HThe Library is also the national
legal deposit library of Wales, holding 6.5 million books and periodicals, archives, portraits, paintings, topographical prints, manuscripts, maps and photographic images.
I am pleased to say that the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth, a
legal deposit library entitled to claim a copy of everything published in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, also has a copy, which is available for study at the library (shelfmark XCT 399 A566).
