Likely reasons for these findings being inconsistent with other literature sources include; (1) the nociceptive stimulus not being of a high enough intensity to have an attenuating effect on performance, (2) the acute nature of the nociceptive stimulus as well as the sample group being comprised of healthy participants as opposed to chronic patients, (3) the complexity or duration of the cognitive tasks may not have been great enough to evoke the required level of concentration to have a significant distraction effect, or (4) the potential loss of the distraction effect, the moment participants were asked to rate their perceived discomfort mid-way through the condition.
