But nature is here personified, so that the sound is said to be a "plaintful story," which the vale tells the hill cave and the hill cave repeats, recital and echo merging into a "double voice," a virtual duet.
Possibly the "plaintful story" that issues from the "vale" is the woman's lamentations themselves, heard from afar, but, if so, they blend with the sounds of nature.
