After reading the book, I was struck by the omission of the motif of the "plunder of the Egyptians' (the spoliatio Aegyptiorum), so important in the Church Fathers, and it seemed to me that a few themes could have been tackled differently.
As such, Smith's work here represents a living example of that spoliatio Aegyptiorum characteristic of the Church's rich apologetic tradition: harvesting whatever truth is found embedded in even the most hostile of non-Christian thought, asking: "What does postmodern theory have to say about the shape of the church?
