When substituting for an out-of-stock item, a retailer can increase chances that the consumer will substitute by replacing the out-of-stock item with a product that, in combination with the other items available, allows the consumer to buy an item that has two of the three same characteristics (brand, size, variety) as the out-of-stock item.
