This elaborate and highly self-conscious literary framework allows not just for the tellers of the tales to respond to one another, but also for the tales themselves to develop, to modify, to subvert, and to satirise the narratives which precede them, and we see this in the prologue to The Summoner's Tale, which takes up the very theme of hell and damnation with which The Friar's Tale concluded.
