Founded in 1130, the Abbey, which has housed Cistercian monks, boasted Tudor splendour and seen thriving industry over the centuries, has benefited from significant interpretational and structural improvements over the last decade - with critical work on the
undercroft just completed.
"The
Undercroft will provide a fantastic new venue in the heart of the city which we are aiming to open it to the public in the Autumn of 2020." Becky Clark, the Church of England's Director of Churches and Cathedrals, said: "Creating positive and lasting change for people and communities is a vision The National Lottery Heritage Fund shares with cathedrals, so the news that Worcester Cathedral has benefitted from this most recent round of funding is tremendous.
The
undercroft is part of a grade II-listed town house, probably medieval in origin having been possibly extended circa 1800.
A spokesperson for Coventry City Council said: "We are undertaking a small scale refurbishment and architectural enhancement scheme in the
undercroft at St Mary's Guildhall.
An authentic Georgian three-course dinner will be served in the magnificent medieval
Undercroft Restaurant at Durham Cathedral on July 23.

Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster to the start of the military procession at St Clement Danes in The Strand.
The day before the funeral the coffin will be transferred to the Chapel of St Mary
Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster.
They now make up part of Durham Cathedral's PS1.2m makeover of its
Undercroft, to include a new coffee shop and gift store.
